West Cork and Gougane Barra Tour
Collection time 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm finish time between 9.30 pm and midnight depending on client.
Our first stop is Blarney Castle to kiss the fabled Blarney stone and enjoy a little time exploring the wonderful gardens surrounding the castle. On leaving the castle we travel to Beal Na Blaithe where Michael Collins was assassinated then crossing the valley we stop briefly at Horn Hill stone circle although not an imposing or complete stone circle it has an interesting history. Driving on we keep heading west to Kinneaigh Round Tower this excellent example of an Irish Round Tower built in the 11th century is situated next to a relatively modern church by Irish standards built in the late 17th century. Just up the road is Cahirvagliair Ring Fort archaeologists estimated the time period in which the fort was built to be within a century or two of 1000 AD. Moving on towards Gougane Barra we travel the south lake road along the shores of Lough Aluha stopping briefly at the Mass rock this stone alter has been in use since the 16th century and mass is still celebrated annually at the rock. Our final stop before dinner at the famous Gougane Barra Hotel is St. Fin Barre’s bridge over the River Lee, a bridge has been recorded on this location since the 6th century. Hidden away in the folds of the Sheehy Mountains Gougane Barra is one of the most romantic places in Ireland and Katie the chef running the restaurant at the Gougane Barra hotel uses local organic produce to conjure up amazing meals to tantalize your taste buds. A little time in the bar to relax before heading to Cork (about a 40 minute drive) and to your hotel.
West Cork Coastal Tour
Our first stop is really just a photo stop in the Village of Ballinascarthy, ancestral home of Henry Ford. Sited next to the road is a life-size stainless steel model of Henry Ford’s famous Model T. Quickly moving on we visit Drumbeg stone circle one of the best examples of a stone circle in Ireland this historic site is set in one of the most dramatic locations you could imagine, a scenic drive through the harbor village of Glandore to the village of Leap before turning back towards Clonakilty, taking a right turn to the beach at Owenahincha and along the coast to Castle Freke and red strand before passing the WW2 landing site of an American B17 bomber This aircraft, recorded only as #3090 in the ATC report. The Aircraft crash landed in a boggy field located between Inchadonny strand and Clonakilty town. On arriving back in Clonakilty we visit a favorite bar in west cork DeBarra’s music bar where you can find out a little more about this extraordinary episode this west cork institution home of the west cork music festival is a place never to be missed following a leisurely pint and a look at all the memorabilia including a Jimi Hendrix platinum album. We then travel along the coast towards the historic village of Kinsale passing the ruins of the 6th century Timoleague Abbey and the famous old head of Kinsale golf club before stopping for dinner at one of the many top restaurants in Kinsale.
