West Cork Scenic Tour
Following the river Lee we enter the Inchigeela gealtacht ( this
is an area where the main language spoken is Irish ) passing through the village of Inchigeela we travel the north lake road
along the shores of Lough Allua to Ballingeary before reaching our destination
Gougane Barre .
This romantic valley hidden away in the folds of the Shehy mountains has a peaceful serenity that can be matched by few places. Walking through the remains of this 6th century monastic settlement is truly a religious experience even for those that have no affiliation to religion there is just something different about this place.
A stop at Cronins cafe is a must if only for a coffee to start as the smell of fresh homemade soup will soon get your taste buds working overtime
Time to say goodbye to Gougane Barre and turn the car back towards Cork city. Our first let's call it a photo stop is St. Finbarres Bridge over the river lee just below Ballingeary, we follow the south lake road towards Inchigeela for our next photo stop the Inchigeela mass rock, dating back to penal times in Ireland when the Catholic church was outlawed.
Following narrow country lanes our next stop is Cahirvagliair ring fort dating back to 1000 ad. Local folklore links the fort to the historic Irish figure Brian Boru.
We leave Cahirvagliair for a quick 10 minute drive to Kinneaigh round
tower a 6th century tower 1 of only 2 in west cork.
Our next stop is Horn hill stone circle if the day is dry as this circle is in the middle of a farmer's field
